If there are 3 (or more) Juniors and 3 (or more) Seniors, then the division will be divided into Junior and Senior divisions for the rider awards.   Senior is 18 years and older from the beginning of the calendar year.

Other awards: High point professional, high point nonprofessional, high point horse. The points are to be accrued across all divisions in which a rider competes, including Green as Grass, Beginner Novice and Novice for professionals, even though those don’t count in division awards.

Points are automatically tabulated. Points Chairman will obtain the results from all qualified Area V events and schooling shows and determine the awards. Standings periodically will be updated online. Please contact the Points Chairman if an error is detected.

QUALIFICATIONS

To win a division rider award, a rider must be a member of the CTEA and have points from a minimum of two shows in that division. For a horse to win a division award, the rider and owner of the horse must be a CTEA member and the horse must have accrued points from a minimum of two shows in that division.

Professional riders may only earn Training or Preliminary awards as rider. But, a horse at any level may be ridden by a professional for horse awards, providing the professional is a member of CTEA. A professional is anyone who earns $500 or more per year (or the equivalent) riding and/or instructing.

POINTS CAN BE OBTAINED AT THE FOLLOWING:

Rated events are any USEA Horse Trial, Three-Day Event, Young Rider Championship or Adult Team Championship for the competitive year (Dec. 1 – Nov. 30).

Schooling shows* include CTEA shows, Marcos Stables shows and schooling shows at places such as Meadow Creek Park and Pine Hill.

Points from any show outside of Area V will be counted for year end awards if rider or horse participates in at least 2 Area V horse trials. Results must be submitted to the Points Chairman with the required information signed by the show secretary, organizer or technical delegate within 30 days of the show.

Participation points may be sent to the Points Chairman, but they also may be obtained through the posted Web site ride times. Riders are encouraged to keep track of their own points; it is especially important to keep track of points received at schooling shows since those are not always available on the Web or listed in the calendar. Deadline for receipt of points information is Nov. 30.

SCORING POINTS

The CTEA uses the system adopted by Area V for recognized shows, adding participation points to reward members for the extra effort it takes to compete in recognized competitions. Effective 2006, the CTEA will score championships as Area V does: scoring them accordance with the points table for three-day events. Details can be found at the Area V Web site, www.area5eventing.com, click for forms, article titled Area V Current Policies, Guidelines and Procedures. The CTEA has a modified system that is applied to schooling competitions.

*Changes to the CTEA awards system made

From Kristina Paledes

membership chairman (2000-2010)

At my suggestion, followed by a lot of debate, the board earlier this year agreed to make some changes to the CTEA's points keeping system. The changes are as follows:

1. Eliminate participation points

2. Take schooling shows out of the main awards category and establish separate awards program for schooling shows

3. Eliminate the awards for high point nonprofessional and professional rider and high point horse

When the club was established about 30 years ago, we could probably count the number of recognized horse trials on one hand and a couple of fingers. There were a lot of schooling show opportunities -- most of which were just combined tests, although a few places offered all three phases. The participation points were considered an incentive to get club members to make the extra effort that riding in a three-phase competition requires. I suspect they also were to try to ensure that a rider winning an award in an eventing organization had actually stepped hoof on a cross-country course. Last year there 16 USEA recognized horse trials in Area V; this year there are 18 on the schedule. A large percentage of our membership competes in them and it's time to eliminate the crutch and score our riders the way the big boys do. And just like the Area does. We have been using the same scoring system with the exception of the participation points for some years now. Beginning with this 2011 season, we will use the exact same system.

Taking schooling shows out of the main category and putting them into a separate awards category serves two purposes: It levels the playing field within each category and it gives the club the opportunity to recognize more riders for their accomplishments. We realize that there are some riders who compete primarily at schooling shows. For those riders who do and for those riders who would like to, we decided that adding a separate schooling show awards category enables the club to recognize a different group of riders for their achievements. At this point we are looking at offering awards in two or three divisions up through novice. Initially, I'm sure it will be a combined junior/senior award, but that could change as membership grows.

The club added awards for high point rider in both professional and nonprofessional categories and for high point horse several years ago. Although the extra recognition is always nice, two of these awards -- nonpro rider and horse -- are redundant; both receive championship awards in their categories. Although we will not necessarily eliminate the recognition of these accomplishments, we will eliminate the awards, using those resources toward our schooling show awards program.

I've given a lot of thought recently to our awards program and brought these proposals to the board where they have been discussed over the course of several meetings. We think these changes are in the best interest of our membership by enabling us to recognize more of our riders and by using our financial resources in the best manner possible.
